Black & Decker is the world’s largest producer of power tools and accessories and also it is the leader in household products business in USA. It is top among the global competitors in the small household appliance industry. They are the manufacturer of quality products which are used in and around the home and for commercial applications. Today it is a global marketer. The company also supplies information systems and services to government. It has commercial clients all over the world. Black & Decker’s product line holds leading market share positions in the industry. Its products are marketed over 100 countries. In a survey, approximately half of its revenues come from outside the United States.

The company was launched by two young entrepreneurs, S.Duncan Black and Alonzo G.decker. Initially the company started as a small machine shop in Baltimore, Maryland. It was named as the Black & Decker manufacturing company. Today the shop had grown beyond imagination.

In the year 1917 the company received a patent for the pistol grip and trigger switch on its drill. The first Black & Decker plant was also built. The area of the company was 12,000 square feet in a frame building in Towson U.S.A. The place was a rural suburb of Baltimore. After this the company formed its first foreign subsidiary in Canada. It built its first wholly owned assembly operation and sales, service and warehouse facility outside the U.S.A. the Electric screwdriver was also added to the company’s product line.

The year 1925 saw international expansion. The company was organized in London, England as a wholly owned sales and service and warehouse subsidiary serving the UK.

In the year 1941 the Towson plant began to manufacture fuses, gun shells and other ordnance for the allies. The company produced power tools within the legislated limits in spite of the diversion of resources to the war. The company received the Army-Navy & quot, E&quot award for production. These are one of the four World War II citations awarded to the company. After this a subsidiary was established with responsibility for developing business in the Western Hemisphere. The company reached a milestone in its history when it produced the one-millionth ¼” Home Utility drill.

In the year 1987 Black & Decker rebound gathered steam. Their earnings doubled, and sales were the highest in the Company’s history. Sales exceeded $2 billion, and Black and decker were ranked by Fortune among the 200 largest U.S. based industrial companies. The company was ranked as the best sales force in the U.S.A. It was awarded the Medal of Professional Excellence by Purchasing Magazine. In the year 1989 the company doubled its size by adding a compatible global presence and an array of well respected brand names.
